I can't believe what I am seeing!

Have you ever encountered something so surprising, so astonishing, that even when you see it with your own eyes, it’s hard to believe it’s real? That is exactly what the disciples experienced in Luke 24:36. As they huddled together, trying to make sense of the reports that Jesus had risen, He suddenly appeared in the room with them. Their reaction wasn’t calm or confident — it was shock, fear, and utter disbelief. They were not expecting this moment, because everything they thought the Messiah would do had already been shattered at the cross.

The disciples carried strong expectations about who the Messiah would be and what He would accomplish. They believed He would be a political liberator who would overthrow Roman oppression and restore Israel’s national strength. They imagined a conquering king who would establish an earthly kingdom, rule from Jerusalem, and bring immediate victory and transformation to their world. In their minds, the Messiah’s arrival meant triumph, not suffering; a crown, not a cross. So when Jesus was crucified, those expectations collapsed. Their hopes seemed buried with Him.

But the reality unfolded exactly as Jesus had said all along. He suffered, not because He failed, but because redemption required sacrifice. He died, not as a defeated teacher, but as the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world. And He rose again, demonstrating that death itself is subject to His authority. When Jesus appeared in that room, He wasn’t simply proving He was alive — He was redefining what it means to believe. Their fear began to give way to faith, their confusion to clarity, and their despair to joy.

Moments like this invite us to reflect on our own expectations of God. How often do we limit Him to what we imagine He should do? How often do we assume His plans will look like our plans? The disciples learned that God’s purposes are far greater than human expectations. The resurrection reminds us that even when hope seems lost, God is still writing the story — and His story is always better than the one we expected.
